When you’re training a new dog, most people think this should happen overnight. That after only a few sessions your dog should sit, lay, heel, and everything else under the sun for you. While that’s just not how good dog training works. In all cases of training and developing relationship with a dog, the human must be trained as well. Probably more so than the dog.
Think about it, an expert horse trainer still takes two years to train a horse. Athletes take 10 - 15, or more years to be truly exceptional at their sport. You cannot train a dog overnight, even if you’re the best dog trainer there is, neither can you develop a relationship based up on trust and respect that fast.
It is important to know that excellent dog training does not occur overnight or in just a few “obedience” lessons. Proper dog training involves many months, if not many years of proper teaching and reinforcements. This training is even more rigorous if you are looking for your new canine family member to serve in the capacity of a personal protection dog or working dog.
TRAINING TAKES TIME
It is important to note that excellent training begins in young puppyhood and includes demonstrating and reinforcing the behaviors you are looking for in the job your dog need to do, along with proper socialization. Before a dog undergoes specialized training to become a personal protection or guard dog, it must master the basics. Building engagement with the handler, building environmental courage, building muscle awareness and so much more, and that takes a lot of time. So many owners want their dogs to do the training, without investing the time.
But that time is where the excellence comes from. Rushing the training of your dog will lead ultimately to an improperly trained dog that creates more havoc and frustration than without any training at all. With dogs, owners oftentimes fail to realize that excellence is time consuming. You’re making an investment in yourself and your dog, to have effective and lasting training. Think about it for a moment, we’re a society of instant microwave dinners, instant delivery of everything we could possibly imagine, so why would we want to invest the time into training a dog longer than, say, a 10-week training course?
There are so many training facilities out there that offer to sell you protection dogs after only 10-15 weeks of training. You’ll get a dog that will bite some equipment, and that has some training, sure. But when it comes to the times you actually need them to perform, the training will be lost on them. Building a protection dogs take time and skill. The dog doesn’t just need to learn how to bite, he needs to learn how to fight and defend his family. It's not a game. Like humans, when it comes to how we act in the face of fear, fight or flight is within your protection dog too. The more training we have in our own self-protection, the less we will choose to flee, but will find ourselves standing our ground stronger and more often. Think about soldiers, there is big difference between an army cook that went trough basic training and a green beret and navy seal!

Home protection dogs: These social K9 companions work well both on and off leash. They are trained to alert their owners of any suspicious threats by barking. Executive protection dogs: Executive level protection dogs are the ultimate K9 security companion. They are trained to protect their owner at any cost, and will take down and subdue a suspect in any situation.
